My truck is a 67 Ranger 250, 352 C6. My oilguage pegs out when I turn the key on, and when I start the truck it gradually goes back down to nothing (about as fast as it should rise up to pressure normally). It has a new sender, and a direct reading gauge indicated about 40 PSI at idle. I do not understand how the gauge works, if it could be a defective gauge or another sender gone bad. It's as if the gauge is just reading an opposite voltage than it's supposed to. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It has 154K. I'll see about posting some pics soon. THANKS!
Roger, Follow the wire coming in while checking for a broken place in the insulation, it could be touching metal and grounding.

Just a thought but is it the right sending unit? If an "idiot light" sending unit was installed, instead of the pressure one, it would act like you describe. Full scale with key on, then as pressure builds switch opens and guage will slowly return to 0.
