Ok i bought my 76 250 4x4 from a guy and i looked at the title and it had the numbers for a 1976 f-150 2x4. and on the cab id tag it had the info for the 250 4x4 truck i got. both the title and the door match but it dosent match with the truck cab. the key works in the driverside door but dosen't work in the pass side and it has a brand new ignition lock is there any place i can find out if it is stolen? i'm pretty sure it is and should of checked this out before thanks.
up here in manitoba canada you can pay 5 bucks and have the enitre history of any car or truck reg. in canada. this is done through mpi, autopac. ask your autopac agent if anything like this exists. all you need up here is 5 bucks and the vin # and they will tell you the previous owners, histroy, ect, ect

All original, but not for long
And always being worked on :-)
The cab that is on my 75 F-250 right now has the sticker thats on the door jamb painted over right now, and the tag on the door is for a F-150 and is not the original door, I'm going to switch cabs real soon and I'm going to paint over the sticker on the door jamb too, and just register it with my original title, like he said titles go to frames not cabs and doors, but if that was my truck and I just bought it I would just register it with the title you have, after all you dont know its stolen, I mean DMV did let you register it with the title and when cops run the registration its not going to come back stolen, so no its not stolen
And I'll never find a vin on my frame its way to rusty to even show a hint of a number once stamped there
LAST EDITED ON 04-Nov-01 AT 09:38 PM (EST)[p]I worked with a guy that had more ambition and time than sense, and he did I know at least 5 or 6 trucks like this. He would find a 2wd drive with a good body and a 4wd that was rusted out. He swapped stuff in all different combinations. He even found a rusted shortbed 4x4, and a good 2wd 8' bed truck and married them together by cutting and re-welding the 8 foot bed. He would slap them together and then put a home paint job on them. He could paint pretty good. Put some big rims and tires on them and sell them. He would make a little money if he didn't figure his labor. I think alot of guys do this, seeing the strange swap questions that are on this board. So I agree, I doubt it's stolen, it's just a Johnny Cash one piece at a time truck. That's not necessarily bad if you got a good deal on it.
I would agree with parts swapping. If it was stolen, the numbers would be missing, not just mismatched.

Interesting stuff... My truck below even though hasa 73 frame.. Is registered by the cab... Here is Cali.. they can care less about the frame.. They register according to the cab vin numbers and not anything else.. I am sure the frame numbers would help in this situation. But, vehicles are registered by vin numbers on the cab not the frame.. At least thats the way they do it here. Not sure about other states.. My truck is registed as a 49 not a 73..

Sounds like to me that your truck probably had its cab replaced at some time... perhaps they made one truck out of two. In 25 years alot can happen to a truck. Im sure that the motor in mine is nowhere near original. Manual says its a 360, guy I bought it from said its a 390. I would tend to agree that its not stolen... just a truck made from the best of two (or three... or four)
If you want the VIN ran send it and the state it was last registered in. I'll check it out when I work 3rd shift tonight. Send the info to york01@charter.net Chances are if you have already registered it everything is ok. When a plate or title is ran by DMV it will be red flagged if it was stolen and entered into NCIC. However, sometimes people park vehicles in obscure places for months on end and when they go to get it they discover it has been stolen, so it dosn't get entered as stolen until months later. Since you have the title, and I assume you know how to get a hold of the person you bought it from, I don't think you have anything to worry about. More than likely it is like others pointed out about the parts swapping, and you have a dog from every town on that truck (just like mine). Also, if you want, send the VIN'S from the other parts. If these parts came from a bone yard the registration could come back as salvaged, or it might not come back at all.

Crazy,
If you have personal knowledge of a Ford truck owner being separated from his one true love, then it's your personal responsiblity to reunite both man and truck. Other than that, the ford truck is the third universal vehicle. I've "gut and cut" so deeply that originality is a concept, an ideal, that just makes no sense to me anymore. Enjoy your new find and preserve it as long as you can.
Good Luck, Have Fun,

I wouldn't worry about it being stolen. I bought a 78 and the same thought crossed my mind when I saw that the frame, door and cab numbers were all different. After talking to some folks I realized that much swapping goes on after the years go by. All my buddies have more experience than me and said this is normal for old trucks. I called the previous owner and he straightened alot of it out, I bought his old farm truck and he had started restoring with new doors and a totally different cab. My motor was replaced about the time I was born appaently also. Hope you enjoy your truck and everyone's opinion has helped ease your mind a little, it did mine. Blair
