Changing a fuel pump isn't much fun, plus low fuel pressures in the rails have been cited by some as having a material effect on fuel economy, so, at 80K mi I today changed out the fuel filter on an '02 X. This fellow put a nice page on it: http://homepage.mac.com/michaelallenclark/EXFILTER/
After draining and blowing the old filter dry, it was impossible to blow a pip of air through it via one's mouth, versus the new one, which passed air with no resistance. Conclusion: the filter needed changing. Can definitely tell a difference in engine sound upon firing up now versus prior to the change. The new filter should take some stress off the pump, which should extend its life.

I've been measuring mpg for a little while now as a hobby. If the fuel filter change makes any difference, other than what I perceive as idle sound at startup, I'll let y'll know. Don't hold your breath !
