Ok, did a little research and I was correct. There are two simmilar switches. One has 7 terminals and the other one has 9. If I remember correctly, The harness that plugs into the switch has 9 sockets, but not all are used. The switches are interchangable, but the routing of the power through is different. Look at your old switch and see how many terminals, and compare it with the new one.
Newer switch ('87-?'96)

Older switch (pre '87)

Note: The ceramic disk that the dimmer rheostat is attached to can be either smooth or gear tooth. I have seen both styles on both of those switches.
Edit: Also note that this switch was used in a lot of fords, not just in the trucks. You may be able to take your old switch to your local auto parts supplier, and match it up to another late 80's early 90's automobile.
Edit: Here is a site for motorcraft oem replacement parts.
MOTORCRAFT® PARTS FOR FORD, LINCOLN OR MERCURY VEHICLES
Great for looking up oem parts by vehicle or Part number.
The oem part number is either E77B 11654 AA or E7TZ 11654 B

Tomorrow I will go to my Ford Dealer and ask for that 9 nose switch - yes - the number you mailed me matches with the broken switch.
I wish you the best from Germany and thank you again for such a good and fast answer !!!
