Powerstroke rattle

I have been reading all of these forums and they keep saying that if it starts to sound like a powerstroke rattle you've gone to far. When you say it rattles like a powerstroke what sound is this i am confused?

All I can tell you is stand beside a 7.3 Power Stroke while it is idling. It has a definite rattle to it that you should not hear when standing beside an IDI at idle.

The rattle is from the fuel being injected, starting to burn and expand before TDC is reached.

In gas engine terms it would be equal to spark knock.

Since it can harm the engine, this is why dynamic timing is better than timing by ear.
I like mine timed to where I just start to hear the rattle while the timing is advanced when the engine is cold. No rattle when the fast idle and timing advance kick off.

So then is the powerstroke harming itself or was it built to do this but not harm itself or what?

I have very little experience with a Power Stroke engine. Since they all do that, I assume it is the way they are supposed to be.

I wonder if advancing the timing on them would change the sound to what the IDI's sound like. I don't think I will ever get something with a computer though. Wonder if there is a way to make the 94-97 PSD run with no computer.

Actually I think you would have to retard the timing to get it to sound like an IDI.
And that would require software reprograming.

You have to remember, the CPS, throttle position, coolant temp, RPM, speed, barometric pressure, boost level and a host of other information is feed into the computer so it can decide when and how much fuel to put into the cylinder. With no computer, nothing works. A PSD is a fly by wire engine.

That sucks. When did the DT466 get a computer? I would love to rig that engine into my truck.
