just wondering how hard the seal is to change and what kind of oil do i use for the rearend and if there is an aditive to mix in the gear oil? My truck is 2001 f350 superduty, 7.3ltr, auto. (pinion seal leak.)
Rusty,
The seal is easy to replace, but if you are not familiar with setting up pinion preload, get some help from someone who is, or have it done. You don't want to kill a pinion bearing and/or a gearset. You can use factory Ford synthetic, or a quality aftermarket synthetic (Royal Purple, Amsoil, etc.) or a quality aftermarket non-synthetic (Torco, Lucas, etc.) 85-90 or 75-140. If your truck is a factory Limited Slip diff. you either need to make sure the gear oil you use has the proper additives as supplied, or you can get two four ounce bottles of the Fomoco additive and dump it in at refill.
If you have changed gears in you'r truck you could have a long pionnion shaft if so this is a diffrent pinnon seal than stock Ford if it is the front diff pinion seal theys 2 diffrent ones I found out the hard way.
Try Randy's Gears web site he has the specs on torque for pinnon saft and pinnon per load.
BE CAREFULL AFTER MINE WAS RETORQUE I STARTED TO GET BEARING NOSIE.
You still need to make sure the preload is right. Best to get a book or do a search. There's a few pages with instructions. It's not really hard to do. Don't skip it, you'll regret it.
