I just got back from vacationing in the Smoky Mountains. I didn't take my truck. Took the wife's Explorer because it already has the DVD in it for the kids....

Anyway, going down those mountain grades got me thinking about doing the brake thing to mine. How much does it help? Most I'll be towing will be about 5-6K (racecar and trailer). Would this mod have allowed me to not use the brake on those mountain grades if I had taken my truck? That little Explorer did just fine in 1st and 2nd gear going downhill. I barely used the brakes at all.

Just curious.

Also, where does the exhaust gasses go if the EBPV is activated going down the hill? Does it just exhaust under the hood somewhere? Or in the pipe through the inside of the turbo housing? I've only heard it on once to my knowledge. It was on my Dad's 02 and we were in Canada around the Thanksgiving holidays. It was sub freezing out that morning....He cranked the truck up and it was hissing real loud from what I though was the front of the truck!
If you have an automatic transmission you have to rig up a way for the torque converter to remain locked, otherwise this conversion won't work.
It makes the most difference above 2500 rpm. I can go down the long 6% grade westbound into Pendleton, Oregon one gear down from overdrive, 2500 rpm and only have to lightly touch the brake pedal to keep the speed below 55 mph. 24k gross weight. And yes it makes a giant hissing sound because all the exhaust is being forced through the EBPV and out the tailpipe.

Thanks, I'll look into making that TC stay locked. Maybe rig up a relay on the TC lock mod switch that I plan to do also. I think I saw a write up on this already, I'll go digging........
