does anyone have schematics or a diagram on how to assemble the front end of my 1970 390. I have been rebuilding chevy's for many years but need some assistance on the front of this motor. There are a few more parts like cam retainer, fuel pump actuator and an outer spacer for the crenk. I am trying to make sure I have all the parts and assemble it correctly.
For $200 I got a block, perfect crank, and a rebuilt tranny. The heads where rebuilt and the block was decked honed and ready for assembly.
I wish i could figure out how to put the damn front end together since I didnt unassemble it I dont know how it goes back together. If you give me a Chevy I could put it back together in my sleep. Cam retainers, fuel pump stuff extra spacer around the crank where the hell does it go. And above all why didnt a pin come with my ISKY cam now I have to find one of those
Welcome to FTE Sutphen77, first of all you came to the right place for your info, the guys here are a great help. 2nd you shouldn't use the C word here... just kidding. You should have what you need with link offered by Bear if not post back.
Thanks for the welcome Mad anf a special thanks to 45/70 that was exactly what I needed. I am glad I didnt put it together I see I am missing a few pieces.
If you are running cam C8AZ-6256-A then no, otherwise yes unless your cam manufacture says otherwise in their instructions. A way to tell is the the cam lobs should be centered in the lifter bores when the front of the cam is against the cam retainer. If they are to far forward then you need the spacer.
i've never seen that spacer before in any of the FE's i've rebuilt. i don't believe any of the modern cam makers assume the use of that, so any cam you buy new won't need it.. JMO
I have and if the cam needs it you better have it or you will eat lifter as the get on the edge of the cam lobe. Most of the older FEs from the mid 60s thru the early 70s had them from the factory.

I never noticed, learn something new each day.. of course, I admit i've never actually looked for one either, they may have been stuck to the end of the original stick..
It's always fun to make An *** of U and ME when I start assuming. But then again the local Ford dealer here has been in business for 70+ years and finds me things like the FE windage tray which haven't been in an engine since the last 60s. Me thinks your local dealers are lazy.
Hell the FE motor was out of production before those young Ford employees were born. All the good dealer mechanics with knowledge of FE's are retired or dead by now.
