Im planning on doing a T5 swap in my 69 f100, and I have a few questions. first of all, has anyone else done this in a 67-72? I have a 302 in the truck. I was wondering if there is any specific T5 bellhousing that would work better than others (I was planning on getting one out of a foxbody mustang), and I was also wondering if the stock speedo gear will be accurate at all. (it was three on the tree originally). One last thing, will the shifter be so far back that it will be under the seat? Any help would be great, hopefully someone has done this swap before.
Hello- Welcome to FTE! I have moved your post to the specialized forum we have here that covers engine swaps and conversions like this. Check out the list of tech forums we have on FTE. There is a wealth of information and expertise here to help you. There are a number of links in my sig below to help you also. Have fun!
I've looked into this for my E150. For yours, you might end up under the seat with the shifter.
T5s are not rated for high torque or heavy GVW. If you use one, you need to get one from a V8 car, and I found the ones installed in Cobra Mustangs to have the highest torque rating and the lowest first gear at 3.35.
These fellers do conversions and offer stuff like spacer/adaptors so the longer input will work with a shallow bell and stuff like that there. They answered my email question right away.
You'll probably be able to get the speedo info from them, and if it needs changing, the gear as well.
Did you consider the Mazda built 5 speed, which was installed in the trucks later on, or the ZF, which is a much stronger truck trans? I like the T5 for the ratios and better shifting, but I don't tow or haul much, and as it goes, the van may be going to a new home anyway...
