Ok so i obtained a 430 + auto tranny out of a 61 continental. I need as much help on this one as possible- these are very difficult to find information on!!!! My most important questions are: Is the stock tranny a good one for aftermarket use or should I scrap and move to a C6 out of a later model 430/462? also i've heard of the "super marauder" how hard it is to find one of these 3x2 setups and is there an aftermarket setup? will it work on my 61 430? also compression ratios: 61 shows 10.0-1 and 65 show 10.25-1 is the difference heads or pistons or what? Again as much useful (or unuseful if you've got it) info is much appreciated!!!!
ok cool- but what about the difference in power from 61 to earlier or later models??? Is it heads, pistons, cam or a combo. I know not much is available down the lines of after market...what about cams tho? I know they made a 3x2 intake but am i looking for a used stock one or do they make in aftermarket also? The biggest thing i am looking into is the intake. I am sure that a 2 bbl pushing those numbers has good enough stock setup to withhold the 3x2 setup in a mild form. The car is no longer with us(the derby gods shall take it soon) so i have no reason to restore this motor to original. I want a little extra power. Not much...i don't want to hurt this beautiful piece. What about the stock tranny???? Is it worth my trouble or should i just find an applicable c6 from a later model, I know they came behind 462s cuz i once had a lincoln bellhousing on a c6 bolted to a 460- no doubt came from a lincoln car. Let me know
I see my reply didn't show, I'm always getting disconnected. The 430 Merc, Lincoln and 410 Edsel are sort of all alone. My 58 Edsel had the cast iron case fordomatic. You would needa bellhousing to fit the engine. The combustion chamber was in the block, not the heads, so you would need pistons to increase the comp ratio (the 410 had 10.5 to 1 and really needed higher octane than was readily available at that time.) I'm going back to NY soon so I'll check my info I have up there.
alright- so what could i look for to get high comp pistons- it's not as easy as going to summit like i would for one of my 351w motors. Diff year or is there someone who will provide pistons etc for a little more power **at a reasonable price** supposedly this motor is an ox in a 21 foot long continental i think in its stock for it'd make a smaller body car scoot, im just looking a little, not a lot more power. Any body know more about the tripower on these motors? or is this a myth?
My Motor's Manual (1967 ed) shows 61-63 at 315 HP. The '59 at 375 HP with a 4v carb and 10.5 comp. The 64-5 4v at 320HP with 10.1 c ratio. The 59 Merc shows 345 HP with 4v and 10.0:1 comp ratio. Could not find any ref to a 3-2 set up. So other than the 4v carb and diff pistons I don't know of any other way of gaining more HP easily. Egge (chk sp) machine has been known for their pistons. Good luck, George .egge.com
had one once--couple years ago---------------------was thinking the bellhousing pattern was the same as the 460---may have been c6's behind some of them--the 462's i know had c6's---o-and your right--there was a 3X2 setup on ebay about 3 years ago--didnt know they made them for that pig--but it went for somewhere around 600 clams--was complete--

Forget that tranny. My dad had a '64 Continental with the old cast-iron automatic, and even in the 1970's it was difficult to repair due to lack of parts. It died at under 100,000 miles.
The strangest thing I remember about the engine was that the power steering pump fit in a recess at the front of the crank, not belt driven, and the wipers also worked from that hydraulic system. One of the best looking cars of all time, but not particularly reliable.
yeah ive been researching and finding that tranny is 99% worthless to me. looks like i'll be searching for a c6 to fit that motor, at least that way i can get parts.
