OK here is the deal. I am building a pulling truck out of an old 79 F250. I am in need of a wiring diagram but nobody can seem to come up with one. Now I have someone that thinks that they can but they need a VIN number to do it. I looked on the truck (which is mixed and matched from different trucks) and all I find is a tag in the door jam. The number there is 11 characters but my friend claims it should be 17. Am I looking at the correct thing? Do any of you have a 460 engine and a 17 character VIN? I need to know if it is possible that the truck only had 11 and if anyone has a VIN that they would share with me so I could get this wiring diagram.
It's on the door, the dashboard, and the passenger side frame rail.
I'd look on the frame rail and clean up grease, oil, etc. If the truck has been mixed and matched, it makes it very difficult to track down which parts you need.

Reason: typo
Oh boy, you're gonna get me in trouble. Ummm. I heard somewhere that some auto parts store has repair info on their website. Maybe even copyrighted material on wiring diagrams and such. (That'd be Autozone...shhhhh)
Fordtruckpuller - what part of the wiring do you need the diagram for?? engine, interior, etc? I have a shop book on CD for 1978 that has diagrams which should be the same for 79. I'll look at it if you want me too.
Where you located in Iowa? Boone here.

Thank you. I "looked" at that and will see if that will work.
johaner78... I am in SW IA. About 20 miles south of Omaha, NE. I may need you to look some stuff up for me if the other stuff that I "looked" at doesn't help.
Why not ask a question relating to your Need for a wiring diagram ?
Maybe keep tech info on the site rather than done personally ?
Sorry Mil1ion... The truck that I got had the wiring harness laid on the front seat. Would you like to enlighten me and the rest of the board of how to wire this back together. I need only minimal wiring as this is a pulling truck and I won't have any accessories or gauge cluster or lights.
I was asking for a diagram for a reason and that was to simplify my life and get this truck wired. Sorry that it wasn't made public for the world to see. I try to be a contributing member of this and several other sites but somethings are better dealt with off of the site. Thank you to tcbofade for pointing me in the appropriate direction. This will get me started and then I will ask answers as needed.
For the time being we are trying to use the DuraSpark. We will be using a battery disconnect, an ignition switch, and then a push button starter. Do we truely need that harness or can we just wire the things that we need?
If you are using duraspark you need the igntion resistance wiring.
12v at start up and 8 v to run,
any higher voltage will burn up the coil with extended use.
So....You basically only need.
Push button start switch which could be done with a remote starter switch used for doing compression testing available for about $5.00
1) Battery
2) Ground cable from battery to frame
3) Cable from Battery to relay
4) Starter relay
5) Cable to Starter
6) Remote switch from battery to starter relay (see above)
7) Key (throw or toggle) switch to allow power to ignition system with built-in resistance wire for Duraspark or No resistance wire for aftermarket ignition like Pertronix.
OK we are not out of the woods yet but he have a start on our wiring and think we will be able to make it go. Ran into this sketch on a demo derby site. A guy that goes by VSneader2posted it. If you would like to look at the thread you can here. I will let you know how it turns out.
