I should use Mercon in a 94 explorer shouldn't I? It's an XLT with automatic. I bought Mercon V by mistake but will take it back and exchange it if I need to.
My wife says her explorer hasn't been shifting into OD in awhile. Now she says its having trouble shifting into all gears. It has 204,000 miles and the fluid looks kind of brown. I haven't had a chance to check the trans fluid level properly yet (warming up - shifting through the gears), just a quick glance at the dipstick. Should I just top off if needed or drop the pan and change the fluid and filter?
Also on the dipstick it looked like it was rusted from about half way up all the way to the top. What could cause that? Thanks for your replies.
It doesn't matter which fluid you use in that trans. With the bad shifting and brown fluid, it's toast. New fluid won't hurt it, but it won't help either.
It's MUCH better to change the fluid before the old, worn out fluid destroys the trans.
If you rebuild or replace the trans use MERCON V. It is soon going to replace MERCON in everything.
I checked the fluid and added a quart. It seems as if it has trouble shifting when the transmission is cold, but once it's driven and warmed up it's fine. The color of the transmission fluid is like motor oil thats justed been changed. It's not red like its supposed to be. Maybe I'll go ahead and changed the fluid and filter.
