I have a 05 f350 srw supercab superduty, with the 6.0. Last weekend while pulling a trailer (approx 7000lbs) at 60 to 65mph, i heard a kinda of quite noise, sounded like a electric cooling fan turning on, oil pressure ok, boost did vary, all temps stayed normal, at first i thought fans on but when i let of the diesel, as the rpms dropped so did the loise, it did it 3 times that weekend, while driving, when i started it up one morning, i thought i heard a growel about 1-2 sec long, but have to admit i may be mistaken on this as someone was opening up doors on the trailer. any thoughts, have driven it this week and no unusual noises or symptons at all.
its was your cooling fan that you most likely heard. its startled me too the first time i heard mine like that
Just checked under the hood, it looks like i have a clutch fan not an electrical cooling fan, besides if it was a electrical fan it shouldn't vary the noise as i let off the diesel.

It's the fan, it seems the fan is a very complicated clutch type and the sound does vary with engine speed. I got to hear it on a grade this week pulling a car trailer and a bit of a load in the bed, ~5500 lbs but it was in the AZ desert at 100º+ If I hadn't already found a thread on fans I would have passed a brick, it is an impressive sound.
