Draining water from HFCM

My '06 has 5800 miles on it. How often am I going to have to drain this thing? It seems as though this is a little premature. Any suggestions? I do have a edge platinum with A2 monitor on it. Does this make any difference? Thanks for your reply in advance.

You can always go by the manual, though I do not recall what is says at this time.

Some drain it at each oil change. Some every 10,000 miles. Some...only when the little dash light comes on.

Personally, I have never had an issue with it so I have the dealer handle it with fuel filter changes. Probably not right...but, it works for me.

Manual says to drain it monthly, which is what I do. It's a simple process that takes 5-10 minutes. Cheap insurance as far as I'm concerned and much easier to do in my driveway vice on the side of the road. As KW said, everybody seems to have their own interval. However, you'll destroy a diesel engine quickly if water gets to the injectors. Not worth the risk IMO. But to each his own.

I'm new to Diesel power so I did a search here for HFCM,
Got my HAZMAT suit on, my 3 liter cut off coke bottle, worried about stripping the plug and figured an hour for drain and clean up.

What a NON-event this was my FIRST time with about 5 k miles, got maybe 3/4 cup of almost drinkable looking water and took LESS than 10 minutes. I thought I was doing something wrong so did it again, no mess AT ALL and 2 drains in less than 10 minutes, nothing the second time.

For what it's worth, doesn't the '06 have the improved drain plug? If you have a 6.0 and with the old style "stripped out plug" here's the part number for the new improved plug.. part #2589259C91, and ...as always worth repeating the part number for the fuel filter kit from IH...fuel filter kits #1847170C92 for about $30/ea.

Now what would be real nice is a valve similar to the fumoto oil valve. That would be really sweet. I remember reading a while back about a few folks trying to fabricate one in the shop from brass. I wonder how those turned out??

I just picked up the different Brass plug that is used on the LCF Ford truck, ordered it at the local Ford dealer, came in about 2 weeks from order date(parts guy went on vacation)part # 6E7Z-9C082-A, distributed by Blue Diamond Parts Inc, a joint venture of International Truck and Engine co, and Ford Motor Co. came to just over $13.00,,will see if it fits when I drain the HCFM at some point, 7,400 miles on the F-350 now.

So I drained it yesterday. Now the light is back on again. Only 5800 miles. I really have no intentions of taking the thing apart to clean it at this point. It does seem a little premature.

I have a question , when you drain this thing will it continue to drain until all the fuel is out of the tank if you don’t but the plug back in? One more, do you need to completely remove the plug, or can you just loosen it until it starts to flow?

Thanks

my 05 Stopped draining after less than 3/4 of a cup the tank was less than 1/4 full on a slight (front down) incline, take the plug out and DO NOT over tighten the plug it has an O ring

Only the fuel in the HFCM will drain out. However it's best to do the drain with less than 1/2 a tank, or so I'm told.

Haven't tried just loosening the plug but figure it'll just make a big mess.

Concur with Albran. Just snug up the plug on reinstall. The friction from the O-ring will keep it from backing out.

Just drained mine for the first time at 6000 km (& 3 months), which I thought was a little late but based on this search maybe not? Boy was it easy. What concerned me was what came out. It was yellow like apple juice and viscous and had a diesel smell that stuck to my skin. Obviously there was not a lot of water in here. I got about a pop cans worth out of this. My questions are 1) does it always drain this much and the longer you wait the higher % of that will be water? 2) Yellow? is that normal or is it maybe filtering out my fuel additives? 3) How do you dispose of it? With used oil? 4) What interval should I be doing this? the book says monthly but based on this I wont be doing it monthly there doesnt seem to be the need. Based on time? Km? or Litres used?

What is the difference between the new plug and the old one? Does it look different? Do all 06 have the new style? How can I tell if I have the new style?
