Draining water from HFCM
I think i need to quit piddle farting around a look more closely at my owners manual. I didn't even realize that this needed or should be drained this often. oppss guess i know what im doing this weekend.
Seems like people make changing their fuel filter harder than it is (at least to me)?? Heck, the Ford techs do it in 20 minutes or less!!!
Park on level ground
(Dealer parks on level truck lift).
Loosen up HFCM drain plug and allow to drain.
(Dealer does not look at fuel tank level or open fuel door or any other "stuff".
Flow of fuel will be faster at first and slow to trickle...
(AFter 30 seconds, sediment and water is out anyway.... just reinstall plug and proceed with filter change - dealer does).
Loosen and remove cap with 36mm socket
(May need to use a swivel and extension - just like the dealer...or me)
Remove filter from cap (unsnaps) so you can remove from tight area
(Dealer does the same)
Remove old O-ring, oil/lube up new O-ring and install back onto cap.
Fit new filter 1/2 way into housing and slide cap up there and snap filter into housing cap (must here "click"). The slide cap & filter (as one uit now) into HFCM housing.
Tighten cap until it seats against the housing and until tight. Heck, I never use a torque wrench... just tighten it!!! If any air leaks, it will run poorly.
Open up small fuel filter on top of motor, remove filter and suck out fuel in bowl with a suringe or suction tool of some sort.
Replace O-ring, lube it, insert filter and tighten cap.
Turn key on and wait 15 seconds.... turn back off.
Turn key on and start....
I only drain every fuel filter change (must do before opening main filter housing) and change every 15,000 miles. The water will be at the lowest point of the housing. Only opening and changing the filter does NOT drain any possible water or sediment!!!
-----------------------------------------
Takes 45 minutes from start to finish and I never worry about fuel tank levels since the dealer doesn't (old wise tale to do so). If the light is not on, there is no real reason to always be draining the HFCM... but hey, each to their own. Yes, it takes longer than changing the oil and filter... but it is still easier and a great set-up in my book (yes, I agree that it is a very cramped space to work in too).
