as any one put a topper on there truck, what brand ,how do like it, and what did it do to mpg. i have been looking to get on , cab high, found a nice used one it is made by astro, thay are asking 800.$ that is about half of a newone, this one i am looking at is an 05 model i think. thank you for your input! duct man
I have an ARE, pics are in my gallery, it's the Z series.
I did break the rear window by slamming it, but I think the glass itself was already scratched creating a weak spot.
Anyway, it was over $1500 new. I see them in the papers, same thing as mine, for around $500-600
$800 sounds high unless it's really REALLY perfect, has screens, a front slider to match the pickup rear window, and is lined with carpet.
I did see an MPG improvement with it. About .5MPG to less than 1MPG. It got me over the 16MPG mark though, that's for sure, and that's with a V10 4x4 SC SB F250.
I have a Jason Cap. I bought their top of the line that doesn't have the glass frame. Fits the style a lot better I think, but did add a chunk to the price. I spent $2200 installed with carpeted headliner and flip down front window to aid in cleaning between glass. I love it. Looks great, keeps everything dry and added about .5 to .6 mpg. Not much for fuel savings, but I haul alot of gift items for a store that need to stay dry. Also put in a bedrug. Now if I could just get the wife interested in . . . lol Ain't gonna happen, but would be fun!! Hahaha
I have a LEER cap on my F150 right now & it's great.I paid $500 used,like new.I just got prices on a 8 ft.cap for the 2007 f250 I just ordered,it's a Eagle cab high,& it actually shows a f250 in the broschure with the cap,$1050 installed.
Hey 6L PWR,did you really get a plus in mileage? I never checked mine, but I do know that it takes at least 2-3 guys to lift the darn thing so it's got some good weight.I'm just trying to figure in the aerodynamics vs. the weight to fuel savings. PS.watch out for the brush burns ha ha.
Yes, but like I said, not much. Only about 0.5-0.6mpg. AND yeah, it is HEAVY! lol Want to really flip? I got a better Quarter mile time by about 4 to 5 tenths!! Not sure if due to aerodynamics or added traction. I usually launch in 4wd anyway so I don't think it's traction, but I don't know.
The best advice I could offer would be to check out how well the rear window seals against the cap and tailgate to keep water out. Also how well the latching mechanism worked, like does it actually lock and stay secure even of someone wiggles and jimmies the latch. Once you buy it, the folks you bought it from will "try" to fix it, but may not have much luck because of a poor product to begin with. Yeah, been there.
I have a Jeraco on my 06' F-350, went looking around, looked at LEER, JERACO and ARE,, ended up with the Jeraco, 6" higher the cab model, I wanted the space in side, I got the sliding front window, and the driverside windoor, It's a very sweet cap, and am happy with it. The dealer I purchased it from, said they use to have LEER, but after many problems with there caps,,?? they dont sell them anymore, and now have JERACO and ARE plus the aluminum work caps. Jeraco caps have insulation built in under the top, also to stiffen it for a bolt through rack, very nice finish inside also.
I too have an ARE Z Series cap, bought in 02 with truck, the cap has held up well, Gelcoat hasn't cracked/blistered etc. I think the only thing I will do next time I buy a cap is get a taller one,(mine is a cab high).
Had an ARA on my F150 and it was fine, I have a Lear on my current truck and I like it a little better, I priced out some of the other top names and Lear had a better cost benefit ration as far as I was concerned. Steven
ARE cab high. Great fit and it looks good. SD cabs are a few inches higher that other p/u's so a cab high actually gives you the same room as other trucks with caps that are slightly higher than the cab. I would NEVER again buy a cap that does not have a front window and uses a gasket between the camper and the cab. They squeak, are noisy and rub the paint off the rear of the cab. The ONLY benefit is it makes it much easier to clean the window between cab and camper.
