I have a 96 explorer sport 4.0 m501 4wd 140k miles. Drained and replaced the fluid but had a piece of a shift fork stuck to the magnet with some iron fuzz. It shifts well in all gears, but whines in 5th. Can I get the shifter cover off to access the forks and plugs without taking the tranny out? Remove the crossmember and let the whole thing hang down, maybe separate the exhaust, and get access thru the floor panel? Thanks. -Mac
Turned out it was one of the detent bars that hold the shift rings in. It got loose because the rear main bearing was chewed down to loose about 2 mm. All that fuzz was ***** and races galled away, causing a really loose output shaft, and ultimately resulting in 3rd gear splitting in 2--the dog teeth ring from the grat teeth ring. spooky. All back together now.
