Compustar... supports both diesel and manual transmissions.
Pretty intensive install, most dealers sell them installed. Gonna run ya ~500 installed probably for a higher level, but good cheap insurance and you get some nice features along with it.
Maybe I will get crazy and do it myself. I did my 2000 F-150 and it could have been much better but I didn't have a lot of time. 2nd time around installing one wouldn't be too bad.
I have an 03 f250 ,when I bought it I declined to pay 800 bucks for dealer installed alarm
all they did was clip a bubdle of wires on the driver side inner fender ,my question is can i just by one of the above said ford alarms and wire it in myself or is whatever they took out not the right harness.
You can do it yourself, and the kit does come with instructions. BUT to do it right requires a lot of time and tedious work with wiring. If you are a good electrician go for it, if you get frustrated easily, forget it.
When I bought my '06 I had the dealership install the Ford Gold system (remote start/alarm) and it works fine with the diesel. One of the best investments I made. Another bonus, is Ford is warrantying this as they installed it new with the truck for the full warranty period of the vehicle.
Cheers,
Dale
Guys – Do any of you have any recommendations for a transponder type security system that would go on the key ring for a Super Duty, similar to the ones that are in most keys of new vehicles? Our brothers with Excursions have that luxury. I not sure why they didn't at least make it an option on the truck. I know that you can hook up hidden switches to disable the ignition, but that would require me to remember to turn it on and off!
As most have mentioned, getting a security system is probably far easier than putting in a transponder system. You can get the benefit of a starter interupt and whole lot more with a full-blown security sytem over just a "chipped" key system. I don't why FMC didn't bother to put any type of security system in the Super Duty. Seems a bit silly. I use a DEI Viper 791xv and it's been a good system. I would also consider a set of Jimmi' Jammers (www.jimmijammer.com). Some people have even put rear door handles in the front to eliminate the keyhole. They just use the RKE or security system to unlock/lock the doors.
You would think they can make it much easier for people to install these systems. Look how easy it has been to connect an aftermarket brake control, when the truck is already wired. No reason there can't be a plug under the dash that includes door lock, ign interrupt, starter, AC/heat, and everything you need for a system. I personally like the factory alarm on my 98 F-150 the best, I don't have much use for the key transponder system of the newer models.
i will tell you this. I'm pretty good with wiring, pretty much do all the work on my truck. But I did NOT want to install the alarm !! I came to get my truck early, they were still not done, but they had stuff strung EVERYWHERE!!! There are additonal "brain" modules, etc. that was NOT for me. That was worth every penny to have it installed.
It truly can be worth every penny to have it done, but if you ever do it or see one done, you will always wonder how long will it last! I do commercial aircraft wiring, where there is always room to add wires to a circuit, but on these trucks, you have to cut into every circuit that goes to the alarm system.
I have the ultrs start on my truck,i love it.
The ultra start works on diesels, timed turbo cool down,alarm,2 way paging, and lock and unlock your doors.
The box says it works up to a 1/2 mile,i dont know i have never tried it.
I have an additional related question. I bought my 96 F-350 7.3 L Crewcab 4X4 last year. It has changed hands several times since it was new. Is there any way to determine if it has keyless entry already installed and all i need is the fob? I have bought a few vehicles over the years that did, but I don't know how to determine it on this truck. Can anyone help? Thanks
You can get a key Fob an try the procedure in the owner's manual for programming key fobs. It's worth a shot I suppose, you could borrow a fob from a friend.
I double cheked the catalog and the Ford accessory web site and there is nothing stating that it will not work on diesels. So I would say at this time, yes this kit will work.
