Exclamation ABS/Speedometer?

I have a 99 Ford ranger, 135 thousand miles, 5 speed standard, 3.0 V6 engine.. just today, I noticed the ABS light come on and then I noticed the speedometer bouncing.. The recent repairs I had done on the truck is-shocks all the way around and the front brakes and this was done a month or so ago.. what do you think is the deal?

Yep, sounds like the ABS speed sensor on the rear differential.

so the ABS Rear Differential is causing the ABS light to come on and the speedo to bounce?

I clicked on the highlited "rear differential" but I did not see anything there in for rear diffential.. does it goes by another name?

Is this a major problem?

I spoke to a transsmission tech who did my clutch system and they checked the sensor and replaced it with a new sensor but thjat was not the problem and he pointed out the rear differential and told me that could be the problem and I asked him what damage was being done in the meantime I am driving it and he told me none..

Truck is running great no noise or anything..

The ABS speed sensor is mounted to the rear differential which is the pumpkin-looking thing between the rear wheels. Did the tranny tech change that sensor, or the one on the transmission?

P.S. Those blue highlights are ads, not help links.

So will pull codes give an indication of problem? my mech said if no "engine light on" then pulling codes would not help..

You can have "pending" codes stored in the computer, without having a CEL.

Your problem sure sounds like a bad speed sensor.

Are you sure the Tech replaced the speed sensor atop the rear differential, because I don't see any signs in the photos of it having been messed with.

If it's been changed, I suppose the new one could be faulty, as I've seen new parts, bad right out of the box!!!!

Or it could be a bad electrical connector, pins or sockets, wiring, or some other means of corrupting the speed sensors output to the computer, so give the whole system a look-see.

Do you have cruise control, if so, do you have problems with setting it, or does it drop out on it's own when the speed-o acts up????

If you could make loan of a scan-tool, that can monitor live feeds, you could hook it up to monitor the speed sensors out put & see how it's doing while driving.

Just some thoughts to ponder.

Will be interesting to hear what you find the root cause to be.

I hope I don't add confusion here...do the newer trucks have an electronic speedometer? My 94 has a traditional speedometer cable, which looked okay. When my speedometer started bouncing, I had a dealer send the instrument cluster to a "speedometer shop", which fixed the bounce. (I've worked automotive off-and-on for over 20 years and still can't figure why I'd never heard of a speedometer shop before!!!)

Anyway, disregard all this if your speedometer is electronic...

not acting up yet

well actually he did not replace the speed sensor because he installed it and made no diffrence so he put back the old one, I had the trans tech check it because they worked on my clutch and I was still under warrenty.

When I arrived at Eagle Transmission they had it up on the stand and I was able to go underneath my truck and he pointed out the sensor sitting on top of the diff (pumpkin shaped) and that is what he said he changed but made no diffrence..

so what could it be?

My truck is standard..

No, the speed has not been changing on me while I drive at all or the speedo is moving, after I get up to 30 miles per hour then the needle moves up to the spped I am going, so if I am on the highway it will stay at the speed I am going, coming to a stop the needle drops..

what would that thing be called so I can hook it up myself..

Yet even more pics.. here are pics of the diff, just want to make sure I am on the same page you all are tlaking about..

My mech said the differential could be cluttered with dirt and grime if the new sensor the trans mech put in but no diffrence was made..

I was suggesting you hook up a scan tool thats able to read PID's, to the vehicles diagnostic connector, then drive & monitor the vehicles speed reading coming from the speed sensor.

If it's corrupt, the speed value will hang up or jump around, like the speedometer.

The fact that the speed-o is acting up & the ABS light is on, suggests somthing is wrong with the speed sensor, or it's wiring.

Speed sensors are a common failure.

I don't know why a new speed sensor didn't fix it, maybe the new speed sensor was bad too!!!!

Did the speed-o behave exactly the same way with the new sensor???? Did the tranny shop or your Tech hook up a scan tool to monitor the new speed sensors output while they had it installed????

Did the ABS light go out with the new sensor installed????

What ABS trouble code are you getting????

what would this scan tool be called?

Ok, lets say it is the wiring and not the sensor.. what does that mean in terms of how extensive would that be?

ABS trouble code?

So you saying, that it is not the differential?
