I am trying to convert my F250 XL 2wd into a duelly rear axle. i am finding this a difficult task and wonder if it has been attempted before? I have the hubs on the truck to support the duel rims, but not the clearance at the srpings. any suggestions would be helpful.
You will find that you need the dually rear axle as it is wider than yours (spring center line to hub backing) to provide clearance not only to the springs, but your pickup bed.
You will also find with research that if you measured a dually cab and chassis rear axle and compared it to yours, you would find it about the same width as you existing axle, BUT the cab and chassis have a narrower rear frame and spring mounting location to provide clearance.
This means that the pickup dually rear axle is special to itself and is not the same as the cab and chassis dually rear axle.
This also means that the rear track is slightly wider in the dually pickup as compared to the cab and chassis. This can be seen when installing a 8' wide flatbed on the pickup dually, the rears will stick out slightly where as on the cab and chassis the rears will be slightly inset.
Luckily the nation wide max width is not 8 feet (96") but rather 8 1/2 feet (102")
Been there, tried this before. This was on my own 1983 F250.
