I have an 05 with 4,500 miles and the check engine light came on with a loss of power. I took it into Ford and they had to replace the entire Turbo Charger. They didn't have a good answer as to why this would happen. Does anyone know how this could happen and would this be a sign of problems to come?
could have been a faulty turbocharger. I had that happen on one of my trucks. no problems since. Always me mindful of your cool down. EGT (Exhaust gas temp) at 300 degrees or less. That will cook a turbo if you run it hard and just park it. Its the price to pay for outstanding torque and great MPG.
I have a 2005 X and my Turbo went bad at 1,700 miles. The engine light came on the first time I hooked up to my trailer so I assume the Turbo was bad from the start but did not show up until a higher boost was required. I currently have 6,800 and so far I have had no other problems. My Turbo was replaced 8/20/05 with part # 4C3Z6K682AARM which was the latest update at that time. Now I understand the most recent updated part number is 5C3Z6K682-CA . Hopefully you had this one installed on yours which I believed has additional modifications to the vanes.
The variable geometry vanes have a tendency to stick for a couple of reasons. Can be rust, coking deposits(fuel quality). The updated turbos have a machined in recess to prevent vane sticking. I have freed several vanes by manually(with the wds) operating the vgt duty cycle several times. The new reflash puts in software that allows the pcm to do this electronically.
