I am considering jumping ship from my 2003 GMC Sierra z71 to a 2006 King Ranch 4x4. Are there unresolved issues with these trucks that I should watch for? I am tired of GM build quality issues, and don't want to buy another problem.
7,000 miles on my '06 and so far problem free. The only minor gripe I have is that the 20" Pirelli tires flat spot over night and it takes a few miles on the highway to smooth out. If you do a lot of in town short trip driving, you probably won't like the 20s. I didn't really want them, but the truck had them. Great handling tires and good wet traction though.
700cc Welcome......My 06 has about 4k on it, I have some windshield noise and some tire issues, but what manufacturer doesn't have issues??? I still love my truck. Take a look around the forums, you'll see a lot of diffeerent issues.
Not being biased or anything, but I agree with you about the build quality of the GMs...
I took care of my neighbor's '04 Tahoe while they were out of town, loud wind noise, plastics were coming off pillars, rattles, vibrations...I fixed a couple of plastic rattles...
I have a late '05 F150, the only problem I have had with it is an EGR Valve...however I do have the wind noise and tire issues (You can resolve the tire issues by replacing em, which I plan to do soon...)
Check out the forums. Also make sure you buy from a dealership that has a good reputation. As discussed in some of the other threads it seems that there are some really bad service managers around that can really ruin your day. P.S. avoid the 04's like the plague.
Thanks for the replies. What exactly are the "tire issues"? The truck I am looking at has Goodyear Wrangler AT/S, which I have had good luck with in the past.

I just bought my very first Ford, F-150 SuperCrew (just now 500 miles), to replace my 99 Silverado. I think you will find roughly an equal number of build problems, and issues.
I got the 4.6L, and that has been the biggest adjustment, coming down from the 5.3L. but an Edge programmer has helped a little.
My GM plant working brother-in-laws still won't talk to me, but they'll get over it.. eventually!..
i have an 06 king ranch and absolutely love it! no problems at all! you will love the truck! I have done a few mods which i am real happy with, check out my gallery. i would stay away from the 20 inch wheels, besides imo i like the look of the 18 inch king ranch wheels better. good luck and keep us posted.
I do have those General Grabbers and with 4k miles on it, the front passneger side tread is deforming. I called Continental today and they opened a case # and told me to go and have it inspected at the local tire place.
I would recommend a long test drive. Get up on the hi-way and run truck up to 70mph. Make sure the truck has no shakes, steering wheel shimmy or noticeable wind noise. Check your around town driving for clunking at starts and stops. Those tend to be the bigger complaints on this model. If those conditions are absent you have a good one. I have a 04 screw 4x4 and have had some of the problems but dealer has been good on fixing it. I would say all in all these are well made trucks and I would purchase again. Good luck BWEP
I'll go back on my earlier statement about build quality...yeah, the neighbor's Tahoe is falling apart, but I forgot about my uncle's 99 Silverado that had over 300K on it when he traded it it...i needed to be fair and balanced...

ford9c, why do you say avoid the 04's. I have 27,000 on mine with very little problems at all. I get decent fuel mileage, the ride is perfect, any little problems I did have were fixed by the dealer quickly and perfectly. The truck is averaging 16-18 MPG on a mixed (city/hwy) run. I ablolutely love this truck! It is far more solid than the previous years. The turning radius is awesome, the ride quality is like night and day. To date I have had the computer reflashed, the front brakes completely replaced (due to a slight squeel when stopping), 2 window switches replaced (the lights went out in them) ANd a leather panel in the seat has been changed (the finish was coming off it). All of the above were done while I waited for it. Usually in under an hour or so. No other issues at all!
Personally,
I love my 04. I got it bout a month ago put 7 grand on the odometer and the only thing Ive needed to do is get an oil change and other regular maintainance. Theres a ton of diffenece in my opinion between the Chevys and Fords, I test drove both to be fair and the ford won my vote. I used to be a Chevy guy till I ran through three trannys and headliners on three seperate GM products, not to mentinon the horrible electrical problems. So yeah go for it if you like Im happy with mine so far.
