loose wiper?

My passenger side windshield wiper is really loose. So it makes it practicly impossible to operate the wipers. How do i tighted it back down so it doesn't have all that play from side to side?

If the wiper arm is tight where it mounts on the splined shaft coming out of the top of the cowl, then the problem is with the linkage or the spindle that the shaft turns in, either way it is a bit of a project.

Craigs right. Check to see if the wiper arm is tight to the shaft that comes through the cowl. Wiggle the arm back and forth and note if the shaft moves too. If it seems tight, then the problem is the linkages under the dash. The are accessed behind the guage cluster and radio. A little tough to work on - no space.

It doesn't pull in or out, just side to side. The problem had been getting progressivly worse before i parked it a few months ago, and i really need to fix it before i drive it again. What does it actually take to fix it, are there any pictures or diagrams for it?

So basically this is just one wiper that has slop in it?

Does it appear to be slop from the splined gear on the outside or feel it's from the inside ?

There is an illustration but it doesn't really show much.
I'll see of I can find it for you.

You will need to pull the top of the dash off to get to it if that needs replacing.

It's loose from the inside, i worked my hand up there (i have long arms) and i can feel a loose, 'wing nut' type object up there that i can sorta turn, then i can also feel the arm from wipers.

Hard to tell from the pic but is that the perch or bracket that holds the pivot arm shaft threw the cowl?

It looks like it is broken, if so that would be a big problem. Iv never seen that happen but the cause could be loose linkage, a rusted/frozen pivot shaft, tree branch smack while 4X’ing or that wiper that may have stuck to the windshield during a freeze and when the wipers were turned on……. ”bam”. Whatever happened it looks like replacement is necessary.

While you are in there it would be a good time to check out the rest of the wiper system and anything else under or in the dash.

cheap pot metal and years of use?

Mine broke last year on the passenger side. The arm fell off on the wiper side and was still attached to the motor. I called up Jeff's Bronco Graveyard and had another arm in a few days. The replacement was pretty easy. It only took about 1 hour from start to finish.

I removed the glovebox, radio, and ash tray. With a little bit of reaching around, I got to everything pretty easy.
