Help for a C-700 Series
Im a lost senior in KY.usa..Ive been on here 2-3hrs and cannot find my ford truck info anywhere?? I have a 1980 C-700 Series ford cabover with a 1988 Detroit V-8 diesel ..My problem is in the brakes ..I dont have any..And, there is a vacume pump that goes to a big tank near the rear wheels..I dont know a thing about how to test to se if or why the rear brakes are not functioning with the vacume boost,,I think there is another master cylindernear the big tank in the rear of truck ..There is a smaller mastercyl under the dash by the steering colume..I sure do hope someone can lead me in the right direction in fixing this..HELP NEEDED IN KY, ASAP..PLEASE
I have a '69 C-750 which is pretty much the same. I'm wondering if you have air brakes since you say there is a big tank near the rear axle. If it used hydraulic brakes, the brake booster wouldn't require a reserve tank. The small master cylinder by the steering column is most likely the hydraulic clutch master cylinder. Is there a big "canister" attached to rear side of the rear axle? If so you could try adjusting the linkage on them.
Vacuum pump ?
How about an air compressor for air brakes ?
Does the gauge on the tank read 0-120 psi ?
I have access to very little on a 600-900 trucks as far as Hydraulic Brakes.
Just this, does this look like your system ?

There is booster test info available though.

This site is for Ford light trucks, it sounds like you have a class 7 or class 8 Ford truck, a heavy truck.
Harp1939,
I can't tell by your post if this is your first time owning a big truck.
If so, please be very careful around the tires, especially when airing them up. Use a clip on chuck and do it remotely with a gauge and bleeder valve. If airing up a front tire, stand behind the truck. If airing up a rear tire, stand in front of the truck. Once at the correct pressure, wait a minute before removing the chuck in case the tire explodes (it is called a zipper).
Whenever I am removing a bad tire, I deflate it.
Do you have one or two big buttons on the dash that you push or pull to lock the brakes?
Is your truck over 26,000 GVW?
If there are is a big "can" near each wheel on the inside of the rear axle, you have air brakes. On a 1980 I imagine the cans might be rusty, especially in a snow state. You should not fool with these because if you do not properly lock these down (if the older type or transplanted from a trailer) and the cannisters are rusty, the springs inside can literally take your head off. I have seen where they have gone through cinder block walls.
On a 26 year old vehicle, especially a commercial vehicle, you never know what the previous owners have done. So, pictures are always helpful along with door, tag, and VIN information. On your truck, the information might be found behind the "glove box" cover, which covers your relay/glass fuse box.
For your year truck and type, there is not too much Ford in your Ford. Any truck repair shop or mobile repair shop should be able to repair your truck or brakes.
