One of my newer 7.3 trucks had a huge oil leak today while hauling a fairly heavy load, it lost pretty much all the oil. The underside is completely cover with oil, but my brother was able to get it shut off as soon as he smelled the oil burning. It never really lost oil pressure, kind of like it was just pumping the oil out ever hole possible on the top and the bottom end. I have yet to see the truck, it was about 2 hours from here, it was hauling a 28 gooseneck trailer loaded with keystone block, sod and a 2006 bobcat T195. We pull this kind of load almost every day and have never had a problem with this truck.
any ideas of what could cause a massive oil leak, but the truck not knock or make any strange noises. It didn't loose oil pressure and didn't get hot and no engine light till it was empty of oil.
Any got a clue as to what it could be?????
the truck is a 2001 F-350 6 speed 7.3 4x4 extended cab long bed.
I think i have a picture of it in my gallery.
could be a high pressure oil hose, major o-ring blow out of the high pressure oil pump, galley plug loose or o-ring blow out. could be a numbers of thing but don't worry about your engine. they shut down from lack of oil to run injectors before the engine will suffer any damage. clean it up fill it up, fill the high pressure oil pump reservior by removing the plastic cover and fill it thru the allen head plug there. may not be needed if the truck was still running when you shut it down. then start it up and see where the oil is spraying from!
I'm thinking an HPOP seal went or an oil galley leak at the heads. Sounds like something that would happen if a HPX line let go or a HPOP feed line to the oil galley.
Edit: hey TJ u beat me to it!
