I've decided to install a Thule roof rack on my 95 Bronco. A friend gave me a couple of Thule Artificial Rain Gutters and I've got a bid in on some Thule uprights on Ebay. The only concern I have is drilling holes in the top to mount the rain gutters. I plan on installing the rain gutters about 12" from the rear of the Bronco. I did a couple of searches and found a guy that added 3 rain gutters on each side of his Bronco but nothing else. Does anyone else have any concerns with drilling the holes? I won't be hauling anything very heavy-probably only an extension ladder.
Just silicone the screw holes good and they shouldn't leak. Also there are metal structural supports in the top, it might be a good idea to try and hit one of those. If you wanted to haul something heavy, I would go with a pickup type rack. One that goes up from the bed sides around the top, just an idea.
I installed my rails toward the outside curve of the top. This is where the fiberglass is thickest. My rack is the full size of the top which posed two problems:
1) if you drill too far forward you hit the rib that takes the front mounting screws.
2) Too far back and you're in the radius of the corner where it's difficult to get a good seal.
I load it down with over 200 hundred pounds of camping gear with no saging.
I owe someone here a picture of mine. I'll get it up SOON.
