I have a 1986 Motorhoime with the 6.9L diesel in it. I am having a problem of it sporadically overheating. I noticed that on the highway it runs alittle hot but within limits but as soon as I come to a stop it shoots up pass the red. Also I started ti the other day just at idle and after about 20 minutes of idling fine it just shoot up past the red. I've changed the thermostat and noticed when it was overheating that the fan was doing its job so I don't think it can be a fan clutch. I don't know much about diesels so any info. would be helpful. Thanks.
When the Tstat was changed did you use the right one.......
CAUTION:
The specified/required thermostat does not contain an internal bypass, since the bypass is located in the cylinder block. Whenever the thermostat is replaced, it is mandatory that only Motorcraft E5TZ-8575-C or Navistar 1807974C94 thermostat be installed.
To start, I call anything i dont understand a "thingy".
I have had heating issues with mine. Unfortunately it was electrical fan related. The result was a burned out water pump. Anyways.
We run big diesels on the rigs and this one motor overheated. This motor was exposed to allot of dust and greasey grime. I ended up solving the problem with a pressure washer, washing it up for a closer inspection. Turned out the fins were full of putrified vikings from the last settling of Canada... I pressure washed it till the thing gleamed... Temp dropped back to 180/90 and stayed there indeffinately. Probably too simple of a fix... But one can hope right?
Water pump? Is it leaking from the front of the motor? Burnt out pump? Hope not.
Thermostat? Very Likely.
Coolant? Level? Mixed types? Poor mix? Likely.
Electrical fans? AAAAArrghhhhh! A curse on them... all full of thingys and mystical doo dads. Sorcery!
Of course if its heating up as you come to a stop, its improper circulation, or not enough air movement through the rad.
I have to go fix some electric thingys on mine... best of luck
