I have a 2002 Explorer, and it came with 1 keyless remote. Needed another one, so purchase one off of e-bay (exact same part number, fcc id number, etc.).
The problem is that I go through the programming steps, and I can program EITHER remote just fine. But, when I try and program the second remote (by pressing one of it's buttons immediately after the first one successfully programs (and cycles the door locks)), nothing appears to happen, but after exiting programming mode, neither remote will work then. Also, the 4x4 high indicator will flash 4 times, go off for a while, and flash 4 times again, repeating indefinitely. Note that this ONLY happens when unsuccessfully programming one of the remotes. And once we're in this mode, the only way to start over is to disconnect the battery. Then I can re-program ONE of the remotes again, and everything is just fine, and no 4x4 indicator flashing. Seems to me that the indicator flashing must be some sort of error code for the remote keyless entry? But can't find anything anywhere on the net about it. And seems odd that I have to disconnect the battery, it's almost like the remote keyless entry computer is "locked up". Anyone else experienced anything at all like this??
Pay attention to the last couple of sentences that talk about "85% of the vehicles have onboard progamming". I did not know this and don't know if it's accurate. But I do know I was unable to program a couple of spare keys, bought from ford, using the programming instructions in the vehicles owner's manual.
I found this web page by clicking on the link off your original post(the highlighted word)
Two weeks ago I bought a new transponder key and a extra remote off Ebay and both programmed just fine.
I programmed the new remote and the two originals at the same time without a problem.
I use the new key everyday.
I have an '05 and don't know if that somehow makes a difference.
That site says that it should have onboard programming, and the manual states this also, so would think it should work.
The flashing 4x4 High indicator is what's bugging me, since it only happens when I'm trying to program the remotes, and I don't have any problems with the 4 wheel drive, works like it's supposed to.
I assume this is the procedure you're using (this if from my 2003 manual);
To reprogram the remote entry transmitters:
1. Ensure the vehicle is electronically unlocked.
2. Put the key in the ignition.
3. Turn the key from the 1 (LOCK) position to 3 (ON).
4. Cycle eight times rapidly (within 10 seconds) between the 1 (LOCK)
position and 3 (ON). Note: The eighth turn must end in the 3 (ON)
position.
5. The doors will lock, then unlock, to confirm that the programming
mode has been activated.
6. Within 20 seconds press any button on the remote entry transmitter.
Note: If more than 20 seconds have passed you will need to start the
procedure over again.
7. The doors will lock, then unlock, to confirm that this remote entry
transmitter has been programmed.
8. Repeat Step 6 to program each additional remote entry transmitter.
9. Turn the ignition to the 1 (LOCK) position after you have finished
programming all of the remote entry transmitters.
10. The doors will lock, then unlock, to confirm that the programming
mode has been exited.
Make sure you are turning the switch far enough but not too far (although it sounds like you are doing it all correctly). When I did my '03, it responded just like the procedure above said it would.
Yes, that's the identical procedure I used. And it works fine as long as I only program 1 remote or the other. But trying to do both of them causes neither to work.
Do you have a friend with the same kind of remote. It sounds really strange. I just wonder if the electronic signature of those two remotes is so similar that the system is getting confused. The chances are very slim, but it could be possible. On one occasion when I locked my Ex in a museum parkning lot using the remote, it set the alarm off on an Expedition nearby. It would be interesting just to try one of your remotes and one other remote.
I have a 2000 explorer 5.0 and I'm trying to program the keypad on door to work. I was told that the code would be taped on the computer module but I haven't seen it. Any ideas on what to do? Thanks
You should read this link to a thread on Keyless Entry Codes from the sticky of links at the top of this forum. It's currently a 7 page thread, read them all first you may very well find your answer in there.
There is a setting that can be changed using the Ford WDS scanner that allows you to set the MAXIMUM number of keyless remotes that can be programmed. It's possible that sometime in the past it had been set to 1.
Might have to have a dealer hook up this scanner and see if that is the case.
