Onto business:
I'd like to give you a detailed reponse, but I'm nowhere near coherent now.
One of the other guys will get to it, but I'll fill you in.
The V10 is a great engine. I own 2 and love em. I wouldnt hesitate to buy another or recomend one to family. My F250 has 91,xxx miles and my X has 86,xxx. The only repair I have had to make on either truck was replacing the alternator on the X, went south two weeks after I bought it. Both have the 4R100 auto tranny which has been great. Expect anywhere from 9-12 mpg city and 13-16 hwy with the V10. Its all about driving style.
To me the only good thing about the 6.0L is that you get the Torque Shift five speed auto. I personnly wouldnt touch a 6.0L.
We have 30k on ours should we sell? No prob so far, thought it was pretty cool. Avg 20mpg. Not pulling much, the occasional rental tractor and the boat twice a year. Mostly just kids and dogs and gear.
It IS all about driving style, the wife and kids don't get as good mpg as I do.
Hey, if there is something going on with the 6.0's sure would love to know!
I love my V10 and would not have it any other way. Yeah some of them get better mileage, but my neighbor has a 6.0 and gets about 1-2 more MPG than I get and we drive about the same and work near each other. At 10 cents more a gallon, there is no savings in diesel now. Maybe he is just being honest.
jascu2000 was looking for an opinion, and it looks as though he is getting some.

First off, this is not going to turn into a Gas Vs. Diesel thread.
If we're going to discuss things like this, were either going to it in a civil manner or not at all.
The V10 can indeed do what the 6.0 or 7.3 can do, just quieter. When Ford designed this vehicle, they knew that there were people out there that wouldn't like the sound of a diesel. Thus, the V10, the strong silent type with power to spare. As long as the Excursion is equiped with either the 6.0, 7.3, V10 and a class IV weight distributing hitch, it has a towing capacity of 11,000 pounds. (2002 model year and up)
054x4Banks6.0MaineX, There are good 6.0s and bad ones, you seem to have a good one if you haven't had any problems thus far. If you do hit a fork in the road, the engine warranty should cover it. But to be on the safe side, I'd get a comprehensive Ford backed ESP from one of our FTE sponsors. Check out the Ford ESP and Maintenance Package threads listed below.
jascu2000, either way you go, you're getting a great power plant. It just depends on what you want. The 7.3 and 6.0 are a little more fuel efficient than the V10 simply because they're diesels. The V10 will get you between 9-12 mpg around town and 14-16mpg on the freeway, it just depends on your drving habits and what you're carrying. The 7.3 will get you about 14-15 around town and about 17-18 on the freeway stock. If you decide to add an exhaust, intake, or chip/tuner you could see 2-4 mpg more. With the V10 an intake, the Y-pipe mod, and an Aeroturbine muffler, will net you about 1-2 mpg overall, it just depends on your driving style. Either engine will safely tow up to 11,000 pounds and still have more than enough power to get out of it's own way.
