Hey I have a 71 f250 crewcab 4x4. W/a 390 and np435. I'm throwing a holley carb edel. intake elec ignition. into it and a cam. Here lies my problem im not sure what cam to get. I haul a 4 horse trailer equalling around 6500+ lbs. So i need something that will give me that low end grunt to get it goin and the mid to top end to keep it goin down the highway as of right now the engine has a stock rebuild with about 50k on it and I have alot of problems with hills and mountains. and if it gets better mpg. that wouldnt hurt to bad either. I was just wondering if anyone had advise on a cam. I plan on getting new springs lifters and chain. Thanks for any and all help
Crane 901 cam, cloyes chain, 9:1 compression, stock unported C7, C8 or D2 heads with good valves and hard seats, any 67-69 car 4V iron intake, pertronix or DUI dizzy, hedman or sanderson headers, 600 carb, 195 thermostat.
This setup will laugh at a 6500 pound trailer and should get 12-14 cruising and 10 or so loaded to the hilt with the right gears and tires. The performer intake will work, but I noticed an improvement with the iron intake and this combination is very tried and proven. With the engine at 2500-2800 it is unstoppable.
Thank you for your imput. I got a brand new holley truck avenger 770 from a friend would this be too much carb. and i want to stick with the heads i got. due to the fact I'm a poor redneck and dont really wanna dig any further into my engine. and what about the 941 any comments?
Any parts you put together will work and move a truck and trailer down the road. This is the best combo of matching parts that make these engines go. 770 is way too big of a carb. 600 is bigger than you need for towing. You won't be towing much with the 941. You'd definately hit every gas station though. Your engine should have medium riser heads on it unless somebodies put early heads on it. It's a good idea to make sure the heads are going to take the abuse that towing can do to an engine. hard seats and good stainless valves are a must if you're working these engines hard. I burned up the stock ford valves within a week of driving a new 390 I built.
With the 901 cam and other goodies you're bumping the power of a truck 390 up pretty good.
