something is seriously up with my converter in my C6, i have been stuck inbetween a stump and a almost vertical foot tall rock and had my truck in reverse trying to back up the rock, my drive line would load up, my engine would be spinning about 2500 rpm with my foor to the floor and my converter would be slipping away also when i was in a deep mud pit and stuck, my drive line would load, my engine would bog down to about 2grand and my torque converter would just be slipping no wheel spin or anything. i got fed up with it so i started to neutral drop it and the wheels would spin for about 2 secs then the engine would bog down and the converter would slip. the tranny is stock as far as i know, the engine is also it is in my 76 F-150. any ideas on what would cause this?
also i am going to be rebuilding my tranny here in the next few months with a 500hp rebuild kit, a wide ratio kit, rollerized reverse planet gear and a coupple other things and i wanted to get a good converter but i dont want a high stall converter stock stall would be fine mabey a little higher becuase i plan to drop in a mildly built 390 in my truck in the near future. any suggestions on brands?
Pushing the engine/tranny to the stall pseed is not good for the stock converter.
When you are standing still with no wheel movement but engine up at 2000RPM and the driveline loaded, you are in stall, ie the converter slips, becasue it is supposed to. A stock converter is often not built for much of this. This condition creates a lot of heat which is bad and may cause the converter to balloon which is very bad.
I talked with the owner of a tranny shop once and he said this is one of his big warranty issues. Guys will get stuck and then try rocking it out or powering it out. If not done properly or for too long, this breaks the tranny and then the owner blames him.
Hopefully your tranny isn't cooked yet. You may be better off biting the bullet and getting towed out.
i didnt do it for long, and i knew about the heat thing, and there was nothing to pull me out when i was stuck between teh rock and stump i did get pulled out of the mud.
