Hey all I am looking at some aftermarket gauges for my '48 and I know I have seen some really nice digital ones but I was wondering if anyone knew of some others and where to get them for a good price?
You can get Ford SVO gauges through your Ford dealer and some online places, though they are a bit pricey. I have the Ford Masterpiece Gauge Collection, the chrome bezel with the white faces. These are made by Auto Meter. Here is a link to the Ford SVO gauges:
I would check out your local show n shine or car shows and ask individuals how they like the digital gauges. Even better if you could rise in one and see if they are to your liking, especially at night. I've seen the red and the blue, red is a little easier on the eyes at night but to me digital guages are way too busy and distracting. Just my observation and 2 cents.
Here's a cheap alternative. Adapt some modern gauges into your cluster. Check out my gallery titled "tightwad cluster" I adapted a gauge cluster from a early 90's GM full sized van. Total cost...approx $20

Good luck

Looks good.. but making it fit, and making it work are two different things.. any details on getting the right senders to make it work?
Get the senders from the donor vehicle that provides the gauges. If the donor is a 12 Volt negative ground vehicle, it would be simplest for your truck to be too. There are many other advantages to that, and can be done with either a alternator (preferred) or a generator.
Sam,
Since I am running a GM engine I used the appropriate GM senders. I am also running a GM fuel tank (mid 80's Blazer) so the fuel sender works right with the gauge. I hooked up the speedo a couple of weeks ago but still need to change the speedo gear in the tranny as its running about 15 mph fast.
I imagine that the same could be done with a Ford cluster. I've even seen a 41 Ford pickup that had the cluster from a late model Mustang molded into the dash (of course it had the big fancy mustang engine and running gear also)
For the fuel gauges I think GM's are typically 0 to 90 ohms
Fords are 40 to 160 ohms (don't quote me on this)
Aftermarkets vary quite a bit you should be able to find a chart online if you search around a bit.
My plan is to eventually adapt the gauge cluster from a 1958 Pontiac into my truck, but right now my metal skills don't match my ambition.
I know what you mean. I think most of the aftermarket guage suppliers offer a tech section at their websites (or maybe through Jegs, or Summit, etc) that might have tips for the fuel gauge. I did some research on it but I've slept a few times since then (or killed off the brain cells in other ways).
Unless you are mechanically inclined and fully understand the workings of the gauges your best choice would be aftermarket gauge sets, everything is usually provided and matched together.Adapting some of the late model gauge sets can be a major undertaking,I adapted a set ot Ford Ranger gauges to my truck.Even being a fully certified auto tech with 40+ years of experience it was a real pain in the ###.
I saw a real nice set of gauges,(3-3/8 quad/speedo)at the super nats for $198.00,sorry,can't recall the name of the vendor.Maybe someone else can recall. I was thinking about buying them, but remembered my medical insurance payment was due!
yes, way cool when you can get things that match..
BUT.. I have the mustang gas tank, with a non-generic sender (ie ford)..
SO, I need a fuel gauge that will match that, in a set that will work together!..
none of the general sets that I have looked at will support the mustang sender. (they use the GM 0-30 ohm range)..
course I could throw out that tank, get a different one that supported the GM type sender ..
I agree with the above opinion about digital gauges. They tend to look better in way custome hotrods. I like regular gauges with needles. Ask somebody at the shows if they would do digital again or go with gauges. I suspect most would opt for gauges over the glowing numbers. JMHO Jag
I wanted to use a 4-1 guage and also have a tach and speedo, so I made up a cluster of my own. The top bezel is 1" and the bottom is 1/2". It is going to protrude from the dash about 1/8" all the way around will be chromed with the car color as a background for the guages. Check the profile as I don't know how to include a picture with this post.

I have autometer in my 56 with a Muscrat tank. You must order the kit with the proper fuel gauge. Jegs was the supplier for mine, but they could not order the matching clock so I ordered it from a local vendor. Autometer will also exchange a gauge from the generic set for the proper ( ford ) gauge for $5.00 if needed. I've been told it costs less to do it this way if you have the time to ship it back and wait for the replacement. Jegs low pricing is for the more popular sets that include a new sender that will not work in the ford tank. Something to consider. PS: I love my Platinum Series gauges.
