rearend bounces

When in reverse the rear end starts to bounce pretty hard. It feels like the the tires are basketballs being dribbled.

Reverse gear can be jerky in reverse when slipping the clutch but not enough to bounce the rear end.
How fast are you backing up? If you are driving like a wildman and spinning the tires in reverse it will bounce like a jackrabbit for sure.

Without more info or actually able to see what is going on, you might have a glazed clutch/flywheel which will be more pronounced in reverse or there is a problem in the drivetrain.

Does the problem appear at all going forward, even slightly? Could be the rearend is binding internally. Carefully check u-joints, carrier bearing (if it has one). I've seen some very weird things happen with extremly stiff u-joints.

Do you know if you have a limited slip or posi rear axle? Could be a problem. More info about the truck would be useful.

I have also seen a brake lining come apart and get stuck while backing. A portion came off so there was no metal noise but it would partially slip behind the remaining lining and try to stop that wheel. Moving forward would release the wheel, happens the other way round also where you can back up but not move forward.

Does the trailer have electric brakes or surge brakes?

I have had trailers with surge brakes cause this, when you are backing up the trailer is applying the brakes. If the trailer is loaded and you are backing uphill, the trailer thinks it is shoving you down a hill, so it puts the brakes on. It will get to a point where you will not be able to push any harder, the brakes will be locked. All that can happen is the rear tires spin. But if you are on blacktop or concrete, the springs wrap up till it makes the wheel hop. When that happens, all the wrap in the springs and torque in the driveline is released till the wheels return to the ground and the process starts again.

This is a very bad thing, that is a very easy way to break driveline components.
Wheel hop under power can trash U joints and gears from the harmonic balancer back.
