Bought a Bronco project last year that had a good start on it. 460 with L&L headers, 9" lift, etc.
Motor is pretty tired I think. Haven't dont a compression check on all cyl yet, but couple I tried have around 120.
Seems to run great when rpms are up and in park, but in drive it barely runs. Backfires like crazy.
It has a new timing chain, have swapped carbs and distributors.
Anything else I should look for? Continue on with the compression check?
I would check the timing to see if when the new dist was installed that it was on the right tooth. Also the vacumn advance may not be working. Check to make sure that the timing chain is in the right place, bring engine up to TDC on the firing stroke, look at where the timing marks are at and pull dist cap and see where the rotor is pointing.
Actually I double and triple checked that too. I had a non vacuum Unilite installed in between a couple stock units with vacuum advance with no change. (Assuming cam should be healthy enough to run the non vacuum dist)
I'll have someone else check my work too. Thanks for the tips
