ok, its been almost a year and a half but i finally got my new engine in and going. it seems like a real strong engine, but i need some help here. first off i know this sounds hysterical but do i need a balancer? my engine doesnt have one and the shop i bought it from told me i didnt need one on it. they biuld alot of race engines and had some impressive stuff there so i took their word for it even though it sounds ridiculous. that out of the way, my engine is running funny,( pause for laughter). it doesnt really have ang bottom end and doesnt seem healthy below 2000 rpm. this is ESPECIALLY noticable when i shift, it accelerates smooth then i shift and it acts like im short shifting and lugging at 900rpm. if i bob the throttle a bit it seems to sooth it out. i can start out in second (np435) and its fine then i shift to third blah, play with the accelerater a bit then accelerate to fourth, shift blah, play with it and its ok. i think its either the balancer or the carb HELP!!!!
Yes, you need one if you are gonna put more than a 1000 miles on the engine (1000 miles is about the maximum any race motor sees before teardown and rebuild). The damper smooths out harmonics that will destroy bearings. Your problem sounds like carb or ignition (but could be too much cam) and the damper won't help it. FYI, I know of no race engines not running a damper, it's posible but you would need to balance the engine perfectly which is not easy or cheap. If it was me I'd find a different shop that knows the difference between a street motor and a race motor.

It might have no bottom end because the shop may have put in a racing cam. A dedicated race engine has no need to make power below 2000rpm, so the cam is not designed for it. You need to get the specs on the motor from the shop so you can figure out how to fix it. Specs like comp ratio, cam lift and duration, carb size, etc. And also, what kind of heads and intake are you running?
i feel sick, well im not racing. the motor is supposed to be stock, but it does seem to have a cam, ill get a balancer on it right away where can i get one for a reasonable price? im gonna change the carb too. i timed the motor by pulling the #1 plug and then by ear. runs nice except for the latter. how can i measure the cam in the engine? will a dial indicator on the push rod do the job? no wonder i got such a deal. ok thanks guys i really appreciate it.

Reminds me of my situation... I bought a rebuilt longblock from a local place, people on here warned me that their reputation wasn't good, and now, I have had so far some bad lifters, and possibly bad valves And I just put it in like 2 weeks ago. They also told me to do some things a certain way when I swapped it out, and it turns out their advice was not good at all and caused me to have to go back and re-do some things. I'm just saying it reminds me of myself, being scared of somethign being screwed up because you bought an engine from someone who wasn't 100% trustworthy. NEVER AGAIN. I wish I would have spent the extra $500 for an ATK engine or something, so I could feel really confident that nothing was screwed up. Some lessons are hard...especially if it turns out my valves are bad...
Try the junkyard. When you do install it, verify that 0 degrees on the balancer is TDC on #1 cylinder. If it's not, take it back and get a different one.
