Charging system

Ok guys! I have a 89 2wd extended cab, 2.9L with 80,000 on it. The other day I come out from work battery is dead, get a jump starts right up, but volt gauge is reading and dancing between 14-17 amps. Get it home throw it on the charger, give it a try..nothin, big humm from starter sylinoid. Replaced starter, sylinoid, removed alternator and voltage regulator, no change. Next step is too replace ground, but appears fine. Its something big drawing the amps..i can watch them drop on the multi-meter. Thanks in advance!

Have you tried removing the fuse links from the side of the starter relay?

The draw should go away when one of them is removed, then look at your wiring diagram to see what that fuse link feeds.

How old is the battery? Sounds like your battery could be bad.

Check the fusible link running near the air intake next to Map. The rub and rupture. Did mine twice.

With the ignition switch off the only thing the EEC relay fuse is connected to is one of the pins on the computer.

So it "sounds" like some sort of problem with the computer is causing your drain.

Wish I knew more about this sort of thing.

These folks -A-1 Cardone 888 280-8324-are in the business of rebuilding automotive computers.

See if they can give you any ideas on this, or see if they can refer you to someone in your area.

Another thought is that the EEC relay might be stuck closed. It should only be closed with the ignition on. Check for voltage on the solid red wire with ignition off.

If this is an EEC problem you'd have to find one from the wrecker wih exact matching numbers.

Remans are around 80 bucks.

Glad to hear it's fixed.
