I recently bought a 69 f100 on a 76 4x4 chasis. It had a blown 390 with a four speed tranny (i think its a y-18 but Ill have to make sure). What would be the best engine to put in? I found agreat deal on a 460 but ill have to change mounts an bell. What do you think?
Michael, rebuild the 390, it will deliver great power to the ground on your 4X4. The 460 is best suited for pulling big trailers. Remember this, the bigger the horse, the mo hay he eats.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
69,
John is right on as usual.
The 390 is a bone crusher and can delver all the performance anyone needs.
The 302 is my choice for a daily driver. If you drive every day and pay for your own gas, a small block is the way to go.
If you haul horses, or dirt, or plow snow; go with a big block.

TOMLINSON, by all means, rebuild the 390. Make sure you have the right pieces, the 4wd trucks came from the factory with 352s or 360s. But lots of us have dropped a 390 in its place and are VERY happy with it. If 350-400 hp and 450 lbs-ft of torque are enough, a well built 390 can deliver without even breaking a sweat. Because your building it from the get-go, you can fix the FE oiling issues and pick the right combination of parts to make it do whatever you need it to do. The FE series is also lighter than the 429/460 by a hundred pounds or so. DF
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Jan-02 AT 07:45 PM (EST)]Everyone thanks a lot. I like the sound of 350+ HP and Especially "Bone Crusher". And i didn't really want to go change the bell and mounts and all that junk. I've heard only vaguely about the oil problems could you explain what the problems are exactly? Thanks
