on my '77 F100 my brother says I have the weak 9" because it dosent have the double casting web on the front case I know this is not the original rear end ,but I thought a 9" was a 9" need help all opinions and coments welcome
Your bro is right for the most part, but it's really not gonna matter much unless you are substantially increasing horsepower. The other one is a little stronger, but it can still break.
There are a few things that can make the 9 inch weaker. Small bearing axle vrs the large bearing axle. Then you have the Banjo style housing vrs the heavier truck housing which I am not sure when and where the truck housing became a standard thing. Then you have the cases which your brother speaks of. The case with two ribs and the big N between the two ribs is the strongest factory case offered. Then you can get what is known as a WAR case which has two ribs as well but it is weaker than the C7xpart number?) case.
There is also some differences is bearing sizes on the case and the pinion support that can increase the strength of the over case. I don't know much about the pinion support and I am not 100% sure Ford offered bigger pinion bearings from the factory.
