As with most everything, you get what you pay for. If you want a good base to start with, you should expect to pay $1000+, depending on where the truck comes from. A $200 truck will need way more work, and it may be cheaper in the long run to just spend the money now.

beware

just bouth a 1972 xlt today for $2000.00. I bought this truck from posted pics and talking to owner. The truck was advertised as 98.9% restored. Pics looked great and in speaking with owner he represented truck as anly needing two things, a driver arnrest and a windshield from a recent rockpeck.
I was unable to go see the truck so sent a check to him two weeks ago so this great deal would not get away. Seller seemed very sincere and honest.
truck condition:
rust bubbles all around and exposed rust in bed and driver door-he said there was no rust on truck
none of the gauges worked, wrong instrument cluster for wiring harness- he claimed all gauges worked.
bald tires-he claimed 60% rubber
bad brakes, pulling and had to be pumped up-he claimed brakes new and in excellent working order
engine overheated-he claimed freshly rebuilt motor in excellent condition
trans upshifts and downshifts very hard, leaks fluid-he claimed it was rebuild with engine
holes rusted in headers
many wires under hood have been cut and I havenT a clue where they go
There is probably more I have not found yet.
the old saying : to good to be true it probably is, well it is and it was
good luck on your search

A truck such as you describe around this area would bring an easy $3,000.00, probably more..... If it's a survivor in that condition and has a less then knowledgable owner, you could maybe find one for a grand. If it's all rebuilt and shiny paint, new interior, possibly take 5K to 8K or more to grab it....... Quality costs $$$$, how much can you afford?

Rock and hard place. Buy a cheap project, you can build it exactly as you want it, final cost, about 4X what you expect. Buy someone's running, driving good looking truck, big initial expense but you don't really know what problems are hidden. Buy a fully restored custom truck, even bigger initial expense and you get his vision of what a truck should be, not yours. Any way you slice it it's going to cost substancial money to get and keep a vintage truck on the road, there is no free lunch. All boils down to what you really want and are willing to do yourself.

What a small world. I'm from the Nacogdoches area and now living in Houston, about to buy a house just East of Pearland. Actually almost bought a couple houses in Pearland in fact. You guys should stop by the Texas forum farther down the boards list. We have area get togethers around Houston and we're planning one for the entire State this summer. Stop in and say hi.

Almost bought a house in Silverlake actually. But the housing market is anything but down, it has been hot, hot, hot. Maybe that's dying down as the summer winds to a close. But when you're ready to sell, if you put it on shortly before school is to let out, you'll have your choice of offers.

The next house I buy will be near Nacogdoches, or Brookside Village area. I need to get back to the country.
