I have a 96 F-250 single cab PSD. I've been told that you can remove the CAT and Muffler and run a straight pipe. I'm trying to figure out if this is a good idea or not? Any Help?

You'll lower your EGT's and get some nice whistle to boot.
actually this should be in the OBS forum. but i can still help. it will lower EGT's some (a 3" downpipe would be best) and the whistle is AWESOME. i removed the heavy and restrictive cat on our 1995, gained some awesome sound (still have stock muffler) and it had to help flow some.
yes you can and should! well it up to you but i have both with stock exhuast and 4" side exit. it is much louder with the 4 to 5" side exit. the stock pipe was still louder but not as much and much quieter in the cab.
Get yourself a good 3 inch to 4 inch downpipe toss that restrictive flat piece of junk the factory put there . Then you can build your own four inch exhaust , order one and install it yourself or go to an exhaust shop and have it done . I built my own and it exits in front of the right rear wheel sounds great soots the wheel and tire a little bit . Once you do it you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner.
It'll help but what you really need is a complete 4 inch system like a MBRP or AFE. The MBRP expands to 4 inches at approx 21 inches form the turbo for MAX flow too! As a less expensive alternative get a 3 inch down pipe and a cat test pipe and it'll help a lot. We stock the MBRP and AFE as well as 3 inch down pipe and deletes in aluminized a stainless. Call us if you have any questions etc.
I can't talk with experience about the AFE exhaust, but I can say I was disappointed with the "Bolt-in" qualities of the MBRP.
None of the hangers matched up and I ended up taking it to my local exhaust man after spending 6-7 hours of my own time trying to make it work.
IMO the directions were less than adequate.
On the upside, it did provide a noticable improvement in performance and a slight increase in fuel mileage. Results may vary, I am sure, but mine were positive. After I had to shell out extra $ to make it work, though.
I am not saying that it was an entirely bad system or a bad product, but I would have just paid someone to install the whole thing if I knew it was going to be necessary in the first place. I charge $40 an hour for my labor in my side job in lawn equipment service, so those hours spent trying to do it myself cost me!
Tech support was pretty iffy, as well.
I am not trying to flame anyone here. This forum is about feedback and experience, and this was my experience.
I will be offering my honest opinion based on my experience anytime someone brings up MBRP 4 inch stainless systems.

Reason: clarification
WOW thats a shame! We have sold 50 60 of the 1st generation systems wiht no problems as far as quality and install problems. I wonder if you had an incorrect pipe or something?? The tail pipe has a welded hanger and the rest of them are clamped on so positioning is pretty much universal etc. Glad you got it on and all is well anyway and hope you enjoy it now that the system is installed.
