I have the retrax and am completely satisfied with it. Everywhere I go folks ask what it is. I ordered directly from factory. If you do mention for The Diesel Stop discount. When I ordered mine they discounted $100.00.
I have the Retrax on my long bed and love it. The only draw back is you do lose about 2 feet of the bed due to the box it rolls up into and you can not take it on and off. But I have put tall heavy boxes in the back and secured them with the cover it rocks.
I had a Roll n Lock on my last truck and i thought it was great, when i bought my new truck i thought i would try something lower profile, So i bought a Pace Edwards Jack Rabbit- BIG MISTAKE, this thing is such a peice of crap i'm going to replace with a Roll n Lock. The Roll n Lock is 3 to 4 hundred dollars more than the P/E but its far cheaper to buy the Roll n Lock in the long run.
I have a Jackrabbit. Its OK. The darn closing strap always seems to be under everything when you are loading up. Its getting hard to close even though I have used silicon spray on the tracks. The cover is weak and flaps away at the tailgate when you are on the freeway. You can't put anything on top of it because of a very low load limit. Leaks near tailgate in the car wash. I like the stops every 12 inches and it looks good.
I checked into getting the new full metal cover in place of the current one but they wanted $900 so I passed.
I also had Roll-N-Lock and that will come off this truck and go to a new one if and when that happens. It is a 99 and still does a very good job. I love it.
Most popular roll types at my shop are Roll N Lock and Retrax. Both are good. Retrax will ship direct, which saves you money. Also, Retrax only allows dealers to discount so much. For example, the least expensive price you should find Retrax for, for a short bed truck is $931 (not including installation). Dealers get in trouble if they go below that price. There are several options for Retrax, such as the tailgate seal, lock cover, etc., none of which are expensive.
I don't deal much with Pace Edwards, I hear good and bad stories about them. I know another LINE-X dealer that likes them though.
I dont have one yet but being in Arizona I have seen a bunch of the roll'n'lock covers bubble because they are layered with foam then a vynle(spelling) matierial. The one I liked best was the one from truck covers USA. Double walled aluminum and no covering. Its poweder coated and also rolls up tighter than others. This is the one I hope to be buying. theres my 0.02...
Here at ShurCo we make a soft rollup cover called the Truxedo Lo Profile. It can support over 300 lbs on top. You can see a video at truxedo.com under durability. When you need to carry a tall load it rolls up to about 5" at the front of the truck bed. So with a short bed it still gives you plenty of room. Also, you have to open the tailgate to open the cover, so your cargo stays pretty secure.

i was thinking of putting one on my truck, ive had the access before and loved it and the truxedo looks almost the same except for being cheaper. do you know who has the best prices on the truxedo?
There are many reputable internet dealers that are pretty competitive with their pricing. It pays to shop around, but I would be careful about some Ebay sellers. They may not be authorized dealers.
