A/C compressor not turning on...

Can't find a post to help me out here....My A/C just stopped working this week, working fine a couple of weeks ago. I have noticied that the A/C compressor doesn't turn on at all. I've checked the fuses inside the cab and they're not blown. I did see 2 or 3 relays under the hood for the A/c system...should I just try and replace those or is there anything I can do to figure out what is going on. Oh, and sure it craps out on most humid day of the year so fat... Thanks in advance for any help!!

Closest wiring diagrams that I have are for a 97 Explorer, The only relay thatcould cause this is the WOT/wide open throttle relay.

Your owneres manual might tell you the location & you can try swapping with another identical relay. Might get lucky.

Or if you're low on refrgerant the compressor wont come on.

You've lost refrigerant. To check, you can short the low pressure cut-out switch connector and see if the compressor kicks on.

There are at least a dozen things that can cause your symptom.

Failure to follow a logical diagnostic procedure will likely waste your time and money and may lead to expensive damage.

First, check your charge level with a guage set. With a cold engine (say 80F), you should see at least 60 psi. As under hood temps increase, the static pressure can go up to 120 psi or so. If you have less than 45 psi static, the system is severely undercharged and cannot engage the cycling switch.

If the system charge is adequate, THEN you can procede to elecrical checks.

Steve: Thanks for the information, makes sence to start that route. For some reason the guage I bought is not fitting so I need to get a new one to perform that check.
