PS conversion
I have everything I need to swap power steering into my 69 F250. I remember people saying that you need the driver's side engine perch. I compared the two and they seem to be identical. My parts truck is a 72 F100. Does anyone know why you need the engine perch?

The PS gear box is a little larger than the manual one and it will hit the driver's side engine perch for the FE engine. If you have another type engine I can't testify to the need to change or not. It cost me a weekend when I did the swap on my '68 F-100 cause I didn't know about the difference. I had everything out and then had to put it all back and go find yet another part. The truck frames come with bolt holes for both perches so you won't have to do any drilling or burning.

the manual perch has sort of a domed ridge across the top, that the larger p/s gear will hit.
the p/s perch does not have the domed ridge, and actually connects to a different set of bolt holes, farther forward on the frame.
your post doesn't mention what engine you have- i can't speak to anything other than the FE.

Originally in 1968, when Ford started offering power steering, the Bendix unit was used as a direct replacement for the factory manual steering box. Then sometime in 1969 Ford decided to use its own power steering unit (bigger than the Bendix) so a different perch was needed. It sounds like you won't have a problem doing the swap.

Aaron, I would make darn sure before I loaded the engine that I had the correct one. Like Sam was saying the none perch is straight along the top and the power is deflected towards the front. Hold it in front of of you like it mounts and look across the top, if the lines are straight you have a non power perch. I have one of each and should take a picture so I can splain it better.
