Thermostat replacement
I've long used mysporttrac.com, but am impressed wiot the info I am finding here as well.
Beginning yesterday my temp. gauge needle began hovering around halfway between midway and H (like 1/4 from max). Truck is acting kind of funny, with slight hesitation. When I start the truck up, it's a louder initial "rev" than usual, and after driving when I put it in park, the rpm's rise for a a moment again before settling. Coolant is full at cold, just kind of dirty.
From what I am seeing in posts, it's probably the thermostat, which has never been replaced (now at 146k miles). Everyone says it is easy, and I am pretty good at figuring this stuff out.
But, if anyone could explain/has accessible some basic instructions for replacingthe termostat, it'd be MUCH appreciated.
If you have any other advice, I am all ears.
FYI, I've always had the oil changed every 5k miles. now using the high milage stuff. at 100k, had serpentine belt replaced, ball joints replaced, and all fluid systems serviced (flushed purged etc.).
Thanks. Sorry for the lost post.
Regards,
Brandon
You didn't mention what year your vehicle is. I just replaced my radiator/hoses and thermostat about two weeks ago. Best advice I can give is to remove the air intake tube and remove the cable to the alternator (after disconnecting the battery of course)...this should give you enough room to get in there with a 10mm socket to pop off the thermostat cover...pay attention to how the original one sits in there...there is some sort of pinhole that needs to be at 12 o'clock. I would replace the hoses as long as your at it....I ordered my parts from directfordparts.com...

flush the coolant circuit
strongly consider replacing both hoses (don't forget bypass hose on waterpump is so equiped) - you don't want to do all this work and blow a hose 100 miles down the road.
install new thermostat
install new coolant
That usually handles it. Remember to recycle your antifreeze (ask at your autoparts store).
