I have a problem with the interior lights and I cannot resolve. When one opens the doors they are supposed to turn and they don't. I have tried everything ( in and out of the manual ). Any suggestions?
The light switches are integrated into the door latchs. You can take some WD-40 or other lube and spray all the door latches. Then you can open and close the doors a couple of times and they should start working again. My lights did the opposite, they would never turn off when you closed the door. I was told this by a friend of mine that is a mechanic at ford. I hope this helps. You might have to repeat the process a couple of times to get all the dirt and grime out of the latches.
Yeah, no door or rear hatch will turn the lights on when opened. I gave them a good cleaning and lubing but nothing worked. What else can I try? Is there a relay or fuse that I have overlooked?
Oh, sorry, I miss read the thread. I would have to look but there is a fuse that controls the lights but is not actually labled for the lights. I check it out this evening and post again, someone else might chime in in the mean time.
does your key reminder work when you leave the key in the ignition with the drivers door open? Maybe the vehicle always thinks there is a key in the ignition. Some vehicles turn the dome lights off when the key is in the ignition.
OK, I tried the key reminder and it doesn't chime when the door is open, so it is understanding the key position and presence with the doors open. Talk about frustrating, especially at night. I don't want to take it into the dealer over a dome light problem!!
If it doesn't chime then maybe you need to lube the tumbler.
You can remove the tumbler by:
1. Placing the key in the ignition
2. Turn the key to ON but do not start it.
3. Using an awl or something similarly pointy, push the detent up. You'll find the detent by looking underneath the steering column basically directly below the ignition switch.
The tumbler should pull right out. Lube it and/or make sure all the brass contacts are clean. Move the key back and forth to watch the action of the different brass contacts. Sounds as if one isn't retracting properly.
If it doesn't pull out in the ON position try the position just before it. I can't really remember which one it is.
Remember to turn the key back to the original position it was in when you pulled it out to reinstall it. Otherwise, it won't go in.
Thanks for your help everyone! I tried removing the tumbler and checked all of the contacts and lubed/cleaned it thoroughly but no go. I guess I'll take it into the dealer tomorrow and let them figure it out. It'll hurt the pocket book but at least it will get resolved. I will post an update on what they say.
I've had the same type of problem with my 93 excursion since it was new..No interior features work when I open the door. I can start the vehicle and nothing in the dash works, no lights, gauges, stereo, Nothing..
As soon as I step on the brake pedal and release it everything comes on at once but ONLY after I release the brake pedal..I've had it at Ford for the past three years and no one can find the problem. The dash has been removed and checked for shorts and there is no error code recorded. Almost seems like the brake pedal is completing a ground circuit..Any suggestions?
Thanks

OurBigBus if you still haven,t solved the problem, I had the same thing last week. That was due to burned fuse. It is a 15A fuse in fuse box under the steering wheel. second row from the top, in the middle.
Same fuse was for mirrors and windows as well, so if those are working, my tip does not help.
