What are you trying to achieve? Lots of starting power for the engine? If this is the case, you can tie the batteries together like you described, but they need to close to each other up front under the hood. 4 gauge wire running from the rear is not big enough.

If you are trying to help your stereo system out, and also would like to be able to run lots of accessories with the engine not running, with no danger of running the main battery down, you could get a battery isolator and the aux battery could be a deep cycle type. The wire running to the front would not have to be as large, and you could mount the battery very close to your amps. The battery being close to the amplifiers will give you the same effect as running the stiffening capacitors. You will have lots of power available right next to the amp.
