Is it possible to replace the front ABS speed sensors on a 97 XLT AWD without replacing the bearing assemblies too. I was quoted $1100 for the repair and due to the vehicles age and mileage I hesitate sinking this kind of money into it.
Yes, and it's pretty easy. You just need to get the rotor off to get at the speed sensor. The sensor is held in place in the hub by one allen bolt. The other end plugs into the wiring harness just back of the front fender. They are about $100 each at rockauto or fordpartsonline.
You didn't say what your problem was however - sometimes if you're getting bad readdings from your sensors, they can be removed, cleaned up and reinstalled. If you live in a rust belt the hub mounting holes get rusty and throw the alignment of the sensor off. However if you have play in your hub or the reluctor (toothed ring inside the hub) is munged, you'll need new hubs.
Good luck
