New Truck?

Hey fellas,
I have been pondering with the idea of buying myself my first truck the last little while and I have a few Questions. Does an F-150 with a 4.6L V-8 4x4 and an 8 foot box and 5-speed tranny exist?...I have been looking since the 1st of march for one and nobody has ANY! Secondly is the 4.6 v-8 enough to haul the occasional tractor(smaller ones up to 8000 LBS)?..And lastly do the ford 5 speeds have many issues and what would I have to do to the 4.6 truck to make it a better tow vehicle? Thanks for all the help guys! Oh and i'm lookin for something between a 98 and 03!

Welcome to FTE.

I'm not sure about what the capacity for towing is, but I've towed around 5,500-6000lbs with my 01.

I think all the V8s are automatic.

If you are concerned about not having enoug power, you might just want to get the 5.4 straigt away.

You can get the 4.6L with a 5-speed manual tranny. Just a little FYI though, you cannot get a 5-speed with the 5.4L.
Ive seen a few with 5-speeds, they dont sit around on the used lot for long. Farmers ****** up good used stickshift trucks pretty quickly.
I think that if you plan to haul a tractor you should really consider a F-250. I wont say that an F-150 with a 4.6L wont haul an 8000 pound tractor, but you are gonna want more power than the 4.6L can offer. For that I think I would suggest an F-250 with a V10 or a diesel. An F-250 is going to be a much better option for heavy hauling and they really dont cost much more to buy than an F-150. Also, the MPG for an F-250 (even one with a V10) is only going to be about 2-4 mpg less than what an F-150 will get. If you get one with a diesel it will get the same MPG and have A LOT more power than any stock F-150.

I have the 4.6L and it is rated at 6250 total wieght. The 8000lb tractor is more than it's total by a long shot. You would be better off with an F250.

Thanks for all the help guys! I have thought about picking up an F-250 but I just can't find a good deal around at all! There are all kinds of good deals on the 150's but 250's are high around here....I found a really good 150 today in town it's an 03 4.6 4x4 auto with no extended cab, I am going to take it for the weekend and try it! Are there any known problems with the truck that i should look for? Thanks guys.

The owners manual for my 2002 F-150 states that a Regular Cab 4x4 4.6L, 3.55 gears, 16" tires, w/automatic transmission has a maximum trailer weight rating of 6800 lbs. The same truck with a 5.4L as the only difference is 8200 lbs. Change to a 3.73 gear with the 5.4L gives 8400 lbs.
