Diagnostic help please

2001 V6 Escape, 90,000 miles. I have a sporadic start up problem. Four months ago it would not fire up, just cranked, then after an hour it started as if nothing was ever wrong. I took it in for the engine cut off recall, hoping that was a problem. Then today, after four months it did it again. It will just crank and not fire. I went away for an hour, came back and it started right up.

Any ideas where to look? Fuel pump, electronic? Any ideas or opinions would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the idea about the IAC valve, but i did some research and I don't think that is it. When it wouldn't start I tried giving it a little throttle to get around the IAC and it still didn't start. Is that correct?

You are probably correct about the IAC.

Just throwing ideas out.

I am no mechanic, but my '02 escape with 45,000 on it was doing virtualy the same thing and it was the IAC. The Ford dealer stated that this was the most common problem that they saw on a daily basis. Mine did the weird start and not firing for almost 2 months. I even thought I had water in the gas and cleaned the fuel system and it ended up being the IAC. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the help. I read in a search that the IAC sometimes gets gunked up and needs cleaning, or if it is cheap enough I could just replace it. So far 2 days have gone by with out a repeat of the incident.

You mentioned cleaning the IAC. I have cleaned mine in the past, but when I spoke with the mechanic at the Ford dealer, they stated that they are reasonable at the dealer even and it is better just to replace it. I think Ford wanted $77.00 for a new one.
