anyone know where i can get a '78 dash pad to replace my cracked one? Anyone know how to dye one ? mines green and i'd like the replacement to match preferably.
A decent upholstery shop can recover it with some 1/4" foam and matching vinyl. Looks good/last a long time. The only way to tell on mine is to feel it. It's a little softer.
thanks for the suggestions. sorry 'bout the forum thing, mil1ion, and I do try to use the sponsored vendors as much as possible since they are doing a great service to the restoration community, especially as the crushers are seemingly running 24/7 in my area.
haven't found my color yet with them and can't afford $250 for an item like this, $100 is maybe doable, but not if i still have work to do to get the color i want.... I have lots of parts to buy and just want to get steared in right direction...
I may try upholstery shop, need my seats recovered to so that's an excellent idea.
I'll slink off to appearance for the rest of my questions non-mechanical that have something to do with form over function..
If you can't afford a new replacement consider finding a used one from a Friendly climate to adverse ones.
Adverse is a hot climate where interiors bake and disintegrate.
Northern climates are more friendly to interior deterioration.
I know here in Alberta I can go to a wrecking yard and find a 30-70% ratio of good to bad.
In most cases is is too bad the owner ruined the dash from damage.
My dash is still MINT ....like it came new.
I have had my truck garaged, parked away from the sun when outside, and put sun shades on the windshield when needed for 28 years.
Oh btw, you can't have it ,,,especially cause it's green
You can find a good one as they are out there...oh yes you can
They sell covers for about $100, i believe JCWhitney sells that, and I'm sure it'd hold up a while.
Man Mil1ion, my 77 was garaged for it's hole life, and you can see it's worn and has a big crack in it. Wish I had the same luck as you, but 100 degree weather will get to it.... oh well.
I'm in Augusta GA and all the adverse conditions and more are here. Salvage yards here are crushing alot, and so far I've driven about 160 miles looking for good parts. It's kind of tough, but I've not given up. Still, time is valuable and I caught hell over Memorial weekend cause I was gone searching longer than I should have.
eBay has had many original dash pads on there site recently, in fact I just saw a green one get sold recently and I just bought a blue one that I am going to dye sandle color for my application.
Hey thanks for the reply. I'll keep looking. I got a dyeing recipe (procedure) from Mil1ion so hope it's something i can do well. How much did you pay for your pad? how bout dyeing kit? Where'd you get it? sorry for all questions but i'm gathering info.
I was just on ebay and saw one for $70, and I was just looking through a LMC catalog and saw those covers I was telling you about for $80 in black, blue, gray, red, and saddle.
Now I don't care for LMCs quality on anything, but I don't see them messing up a cover. But I have heard there colors aren't Ford matched, a completly different shad of red(for instance), but still red.
Whether is it Vinyl dye or paint it does them all.
Note: Don't buy dye in spray bombs.
That can of dye can sit on the shelf there for years before being sold.
It goes bad
Buy a fresh vinyl dye product at a automotive paint shop, they mix it exactly to the color code you need as they have all the books in that stuff.
It may cost more but the results are unbelievably high quality.
The paint shop will also have the prep chemicals as well.
I use lacquer thinner for cleaning and the Plastic prep for getting it ready for dyeing.
